Save the turtles !!!!
The goal - reaching adulthood! |
TURTLE ARMAGEDDON !!!
Apparently, around 200 turtles had hatched from their underground nest last night. These "early risers" were lucky (and smart). They quickly scooted into the ocean before birds, dogs, and other potential predators could find them. Even in the ocean, their chances aren't great. That's why turtles lay hundreds of eggs. Long, long odds of becoming a card-carrying 500 lb loggerhead turtle adult.
What we found, were the 20 stragglers. Those unfortunate enough to be born at the bottom of the nest. They were the last out.........by morning, they were tired, overheated, and obviously confused. Many were actually skittering the wrong way in the sand. Totally cute, and heading towards certain death. We sprang into action, visions of Kennedy in the 60s............Ich bin ein Grenadan !!!!
We began picking up these absolutely adorable little guys and shuttling them directly to the ocean. A little "Grenada Air Lift". With one baby turtle in each hand, we did wind sprints from the deep sands to the ocean, then back again to find more. Seeing these little guys hit the water and start swimming was something we will both remember for ever. We were ever watchful of the seagulls and other birds watching us. One false move, little bird, and you'll be sorry. Only one of the twenty was too far gone to make it. There was another one that I thought was dead as well........not much movement in the water. Kirstin walked into the ocean (fully clothed), picked him up again......let him breath a while, and then gave him a gentle push. He swam away fine.
